Scaffolding RAMS & Method Statement

Scaffolding RAMS have to satisfy TG20 or a bespoke design, and Principal Contractors will look for the design brief, the handover certificate and the inspection regime before they let a scaffold be used. This pack is built around SG4 and the NASC guidance a competent scaffolder is expected to work to.

Risk assessment

Hazards covered for scaffolding

Every hazard below is assessed with likelihood, severity and residual risk after controls, presented in the traffic-light format Principal Contractors expect.

  • Falls from height during erection, alteration and dismantling
  • Falling materials and tools striking persons below
  • Collapse from inadequate foundations, ties or bracing
  • Overloading of platforms beyond the designed duty rating
  • Manual handling of tube, fittings and boards
  • Contact with overhead power lines during erection of tall scaffolds
  • Adverse weather - wind loading on sheeted or netted scaffolds

Sequence of work

The method statement follows the real on-site sequence, with controls tied to each step rather than listed separately at the end.

  1. Design check against TG20 compliance sheet or bespoke design drawings
  2. Ground bearing and sole plate assessment, base lift set out
  3. Advance guardrail erection in accordance with SG4
  4. Tying, bracing and progressive inspection as lifts are built
  5. Handover certificate issued, scafftag applied
  6. Statutory inspection at seven day intervals and after alteration or adverse weather
  7. Controlled dismantle in reverse sequence with exclusion zone maintained

The competency matrix in the Contractor Project Pack is pre-populated with the qualifications a Principal Contractor will ask to see for this trade.
