SSIP, explained in a minute

New to SSIP? Here is what it is, how the assessment actually works, and how the pack gets you through it.

Why it matters

No SSIP, no work

Most principal contractors, councils and the NHS will not let you tender or start on site without an SSIP accreditation. It proves your health and safety management has been independently checked. It is not the law, but in practice it is the price of entry to a lot of work.

The catch is that only around one in five small firms pass the first time. Not because their work is unsafe, but because a document is missing, out of date or not signed. The assessment is a desktop review of paperwork, so the paperwork is the whole game. That is exactly what this pack fixes. You get the full set, laid out the way an assessor expects, ready to put your details into.

Which scheme

You only need one

All the schemes assess against the same SSIP core criteria, so one accreditation is recognised by the others ("Deem to Satisfy"). Pick the one your main clients ask for. The pack works for all of them.

Ask a question
Please note: this pack is a set of professional templates you adapt to your own business and submit in your name. It is built to help you pass first time, but it is not a guarantee of accreditation, and it does not transfer your legal responsibilities. You remain the duty holder for your own health and safety. The scheme's assessment and annual fee are separate and paid to the scheme, not to SiteDocsUK.
Common questions

What contractors ask us

Do you get me accredited?
No, the scheme does the assessing. We give you every document the assessor expects, laid out and ready, so you pass first time. Only about one in five small firms manage that on their own.
Do I need CHAS, SafeContractor and SMAS?
No. Because of SSIP mutual recognition, one scheme is recognised by the others. You only take a second one if a specific client insists on it by name. Get one, keep the pack, and use it wherever you are asked.
What is the difference between CHAS and Constructionline?
CHAS is a pure health and safety assessment. Constructionline is a procurement database that buyers search to find suppliers, with an SSIP assessment included. If your clients search a database for you, that is Constructionline. Otherwise a straight SSIP scheme is usually enough.
How much does the accreditation cost?
The scheme charges its own annual fee, roughly £195 to £450 or more depending on the scheme and your size, renewed each year. That is paid to the scheme. Our pack is a separate one-off for the paperwork.
I am a sole trader, do I still need a policy?
A written health and safety policy is only legally required at five or more employees, but assessors still expect to see your risk assessments, method statements and records. The pack includes a policy anyway, because most assessors look for one.
Can I edit the documents?
Yes, that is the point. Everything comes in editable Word format. You drop in your company details, adapt it to how you actually work, and the finished documents are yours.

Win the work. Then keep it.

Get the paperwork sorted once and stop losing tenders over a missing document. Win work. Stay compliant.
